New Guide for ecceed.com

1.  Overview

This document provides detailed instructions of how to use the Ecceed.com tracking service at http://ecceed.com.

2.  Getting Started

Here are the preconditions of using the tracking service:

  • You need to have a supported GPS or mobile device activated by a suppor@ecceed.com representative.
  • The supported mobile device has GSM/wireless carrier coverage in the area where you try out the tracking service.
  • The tracking device needs to be fully charged for power or has new battery installed.
  • Put the device near the dashboard of your vehicle and take your vehicle for a short drive of 15 minutes.
  • Typically, when you come back from the test drive and sign on to your account, you should see the real-time locations posted on your account for your tracking device.

3.  User Guide for Web User Interface

The Web User Interface is used primarily to perform real time tracking, configure devices, add alerts and landmarks, and see history report. Here are the instructions of how to use the web user Interface.

1)   Tracking Service URL and supported Internet browsers

The following tracking service URLs can both be used to access the tracking service provided to you

a)      http://ecceed.com

You can use one of the following web browsers to access the tracking service:

a)      Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and above

b)      Firefox 2.0 and above

c)      Apple Safari 3.0 and above

2)   User Sign On

Once you access the URL in 1), the following Sign On page as shown in Figure 1 will appear. Please type your pre-configured user name and password and click Sign On button to access your account of the tracking service.

Figure 1 Sign On (Login) Page

3)   Snapshot (Last Known Location Page) Tab

After signing on to your account, the following page (as shown in Figure 2) will appear. This is your default tracking page. From this page you can access all the provided features of the tracking device.

This page will show latest locations for all the tracking devices in your account.

Figure 2 Snapshot Page (Last Known Location Page)

4)   Find Now Action

From your default tracking page as shown in Figure 2, one important thing you can perform is to issue Find Now for any tracking device in your account. After clicking on the Find Now button, the tracking server will immediately contact the tracking device to have its latest location delivered to your account. The Find Now process will be timing out after 10 minutes. Find Now is an appropriate action to perform in the following scenarios:

a)      Trimtrac Pro: When Find Now is enabled. You can find its current location any time you want assuming the device can get good GSM/GPS signal

Note that under typical operation, Find Now feature is disabled for Trimtrac Pro for power saving purpose. In this case, the Find Now feature is not accessible.

b)      TrackStar/GC101: If no moving sensor is attached to the device, you can issue Find Now any time you want.

c)      CT1000: All sleep modes are disabled. You can issue Find Now to get device’s current location. Note that if one of the sleep modes is enabled, the device may not respond if it is not moving (so it is in sleep).

Note: As a matter of fact, for CT1000, it is recommended that Find Now is not used. Under a typical operation, the real-time locations including the final stop point will be sent back automatically. In this case, issuing Find Now is redundant and it wastes you air time minutes.

5)   Last Known Alert Page

By selecting the Last Known Alert link in the default tracking page, the following page as shown in Figure 3 will appear. This page will list the latest alerts produced by all the devices in your account. If you have setup your cell phones/email addresses to receiving an alert, then the alert listed will be forwarded to these cell phones/email addresses.

For viewing alert history generated for a given device, you can go to History Page.

Figure 3 Last Known Alert Page

6)   Last Known Status Page

By selecting the Last Known Status link in the default tracking page, the following page as shown Figure 4 will appear. This page will list the latest status produced by all the devices in your account.

The status, in general will give two type of information:

a)      Real time battery Status

b)      Real time GPS status (if a location is valid for example)

For history of received status of a given device, you can go to History Page to view.

11)  What is the shortest tracking interval Trimtrac Pro can do?

12)  Can CT1000 be used to do auto surveillance remotely?

Why can’t I get locations from CT1000?

There are many factors impacting the location report. Under typical operation mode, you can identify a working unit by doing the following:

  • Take the unit for a drive while putting the device near dashboard
  • After driving for 2 to 10 minutes depending upon the GPS/GSM signal condition, both the Green and Yellow LEDs on the front of the device should start to blink (not solid)

The possible causes of location fix failure could be:

  • Your device is out of power. You can observe the current power level of your tracking device by going to Last Known Status link located on the upper left corner of the Snapshot page.
  • CT1000 cannot get enough GPS signals to produce location report. This is evident by viewing the Status History of your device. You could see excessive Invalid report out of the unit. Under typical operation, CT1000 is put in a covert spot on a vehicle. Although CT1000 has very sensitive GPS module built in, sometime it still may not get enough GPS signal from the satellites of the sky. In this case, it is recommended to remove the unit from the current placement and put it in an open outdoor area for 30 minutes or until it can give you a valid location. You then can place it back into the cover location. When placing it, you can try different orientations like putting the front side up etc until you find the one placement that can produce better result.
  • Your device is travelling in an area where there is no GSM coverage. In this case, the missing locations can be sent back later by CT1000 automatically as soon as it travels back to a good GSM coverage area
  • The battery pack lost contact with the base unit. In this case, you need to access the unit physically and reinstall the battery and make sure both the Green and Yellow LEDs on the unit is lighting up indicating the good battery contact.
  • The SIM card used in CT1000 lost the contact with base unit. In this case, just open the device, locate the SIM card slot and reinsert the SIM card and make sure the SIM card slot is properly closed. When you turn on the device again, the Yellow LED on the device should change from non-flashing to solid and to flashing indicating the good GSM signal and good SIM card contact.
  • Using vehicle power adaptor. The included vehicle power adaptor is for charging the battery while you are driving. It is not designed as a permanent vehicle power adaptor for the vehicle. If you are using it constantly, it can cause location report failure. In which case, what you can do is to remove the charger plug, turn off the unit and turn the unit back on.

Why can’t I get locations out of Trimtrac Pro?

There are many factors impacting the location report. Under typical operation mode, you can identify a working unit by doing the following:

  • Take the unit for a drive while putting the device near dashboard
  • The LED on the side of the unit will flash indicating the good battery level.
  • Driving for 10 minutes or so. When you come back and go to your account, you should see at least one new location get posted.

The possible causes of location fix failure could be:

  • Your device is out of power. You can observe the current power level of your tracking device by going to Last Known Status link located on the upper left corner of the Snapshot page. Also if the LED on the side of the unit blinks in red, it also indicates that the unit is out of power.
  • Trimtrac Pro cannot get enough GPS signal to produce location report. This is evident by viewing the Status History of your device. If you see excessive status entries with “Fix Timeout” words in it, it means the unit fails to get enough GPS signal. Under typical operation, Trimtrac can be put inside vehicle, like vehicle’s glove box, underneath the car seat or used together with an external GPS external. Putting Trimtrac underneath the vehicle is not recommended and it is the leading reason for bad location retrieval performance. If Fix Timeout is the cause of the location report failure, it is recommended to alter the placement of the Trimtrac Pro and make sure that the Logo side of the unit always faces up.
  • Your device is travelling in an area where there is no GSM coverage. In this case, the missing locations can be sent back later by Trimtrac Pro automatically (if it configured to do so) as soon as it travels back to a good GSM coverage area
  • The battery pack lost contact with the base unit. In this case, you need to access the unit physically and reinstall the battery and make sure both the LED on the side is blinking green after the battery re-installation.
  • The SIM card used in Trimtrac Pro lost the contact with base unit. In this case, just open the device and remove the battery holder. And then locates the SIM card slot, reinsert the SIM card and make sure the SIM card slot is properly closed. When you turn on the device again and after 10 minutes or so, there should be status report coming back. You can access the report in your Status History page.
  • Trimtrac lost communication with the tracking server due to bug in firmware. If there is not status report coming back for your unit, it is possible that it is caused by firmware issue. The latest firmware is V2.04 (Oct, 2007). If you bought the unit before Oct, 2007, your firmware of the unit may need to be upgraded. Free firmware upgrade will be provided if you are active user of the unit. You can send the unit back to support address located at the end of this document. To work around the issue, you can physically access the device and remove and re-install the battery.

What is the battery life for CT1000?

Default Mode: Default mode (always on) is when there is no movement for several minutes the GPS is powered down. How long the battery will last is depending on how many times movement is detected. If movement is detected constantly and the battery is fully charged then it will last for 10-11 hours. If no movement is detected the battery will last for about 70 hours.

So for default mode the PT-33 will last between 10 to 70 hours (depending on movement detected). If you have a 5x extended battery, the battery life in this mode will be 50 – 350 hours.

Motion sleep mode: Motion sleep Mode (always on) is when there is no movement for several minutes the GPS/GSM is powered down. How long the battery will last is depending on how many times movement is detected. If movement is detected constantly and the battery is fully charged then it will last for 10-11 hours. If no movement is detected the battery will last for about 89 hours (Sleep interval set to 1 hours). So for Motion sleep mode the PT-33 will last between 10 to 89 hours (depending on movement detection). If you have a 5x extended battery, the battery life in this mode will be 50 – 445 hours.

Basic sleep: When basic sleep mode is enabled the PT-33 will power down the GPS module (GSM will stay on) after 3 minutes and will stay in sleep mode until the ‘Basic or Deep sleep mode interval’ expires. Then the PT-33 will wake up for 3 minutes (GPS and GSM on) and then return back to sleep mode. In this mode the PT-33 will last for up to 25 hours (sleep interval 1 hour). If you enable ‘Messages in Basic or Deep sleep mode’ the time will be less. The time will also be less if the PT-33 receives messages when in sleep mode. Note that in Basic Sleep mode, real time GPS tracking may not work. If you have a 5x extended battery, the battery life in this mode will be 125 hours.

Deep sleep mode is enabled. In this sleep mode the PT-33 will last the longest. When Deep sleep mode is enabled the PT-33 will power down the GPS module and GSM module after 3 minutes and will stay in sleep mode until the ‘Basic or Deep sleep mode interval’ expires. In deep sleep mode NO GSM messages can be processed. In this mode the PT-33 will last for up to 89 hours (sleep interval 1 hour). If you enable ‘Messages in Basic or Deep sleep mode’ the time will be less. In default mode, the GPS and GSM modules inside the unit will be on most of time. Note that in Deep Sleep mode, real time GPS tracking may not work. If you have a 5x extended battery the battery life in this mode will be 445 hours.

What is the battery life for Trimtrac Po?

When Find Now feature is enabled, the unit stays on constantly. The battery life for standard 4 AA alkaline batteries will last 1- 3 days depending up how many locations the unit sent out.

When Find Now is disabled, the unit will be on only upon motion. The battery life for standard 4 AA alkaline batteries will be 100 to 500 locations depending upon the strength of GPS/GSM signal. If you only get 10 locations a day, the battery life in this case can be 50 days if the tracking interval is set to 15 minutes and all other settings are optimized.

What tracking mode should I use with CT1000?

Default or Motion Sleep modes are the only modes you can use. All other modes are not suited for real-time tracking. By default, the Motion Sleep mode is configured. If the performance is poor for you, you can switch to default mode.

Why the Find Now is not working for my CT1000?

Find Now will only work if the CT1000 is awake and accepting request from the user via Find Now. Under typical operation of the tracker, the tracker is configured to sleep when it is not moving. So Find Now operation may not always be working. As a matter of fact, Find Now operation is not really needed in a typical operation mode, since the tracker will send out location automatically when it is moving. In this case, Find Now operation is redundant and wastes your air time minutes.

Why do I keep getting Invalid locations for my CT1000?

Invalid locations is normal at the motion starting point where GPS signal is not strong enough or the unit is put in a covert location. You can minimize the invalid locations by putting the tracker in a location that is more likely for it to see the sky.  If your unit can get a lot of valid location together with invalid locations, it is considered normal.

In covert tracking case, it is a good practice to get valid location first before placing it in the desired covert location. It is also a good practice to put your tracking in a open outdoor location for 15 minutes every time you recharge/change battery or every a few days to give the tracker a chance to get in good touch with satellite in the sky.

How can I find out how many air time minutes/messages are left?

The air time message usage counter can be accessed via My Account->Message Count link. You can always send email to support@ecceed.com to get exact count of the number of messages left for your tracking device. If you have an unlimited tracking package, there is no need to count your messages, since it is unlimited any way.

How can I add my cell phone to get location notification?

First of all, you need to create a device called User Phone in Device Setup Page. Secondly, you need to add one of the alerts you wish to be notified with in Landmark & Alert Tab. For detailed walk through, see Page 37.

What is the recommended value for CT1000 tracking interval?

Sleep Interval: 12 hours;

Real time tracking online interval: 3 minutes;

Real time tracking sleep interval: 0

What is the shortest tracking interval Trimtrac Pro can do?

A user can set the interval to up to 1 minute, which can produce the real tracking interval of 1-3 minutes. If you desire shorter tracking interval, it can be set by sending a support request to support@ecceed.com. It is recommended that the shorter tracking interval is used together with vehicle power adaptor.

Can CT1000 be used to do audio surveillance?

CT1000 does have an embedded audio microphone that can be used to establish phone call automatically by calling the phone number assigned to it. This is an unsupported feature and use this feature will exhaust your air time minutes quickly or it is not supported by type of air time service you have bought. The microphone is designed to communicate with remote party remotely by having remote party speak very close to the unit. Use of this embedded audio microphone remotely to monitor the surrounding sounds may or may not produce usable audio information.
